The Problem with DIY Mold Test Kits

Almost every DIY mold test kit sold online works the same way: you set out a petri dish, wait, and send it to a lab. The problem is that these kits almost always come back positive — because mold spores are naturally present in every home's air. A positive result doesn't tell you whether you have an active mold problem or just normal background levels.

These kits can't distinguish between the dozens of common mold species, can't measure spore concentration, and can't tell you whether the spores are viable (alive and capable of growing). You end up with an alarming result and no actionable information.

Surface Testing vs Air Sampling

Surface testing (swab or tape lift) tells you what's growing on a specific visible spot. It's useful for identifying the species but doesn't tell you how far the problem has spread through your air.

Air sampling is more informative because it measures the concentration of spores in your air — the real indicator of an active problem. We use an Environmental Express Bio Pump IAQ 15 to collect spore-trap samples and send them to an independent AIHA-accredited lab for analysis. The report shows exactly which species are present and at what concentration, measured against outdoor baseline levels.

The Test That Actually Matters: Viable Air Sampling

The most meaningful test is a viable air sample — one that specifically looks for live, growing mold spores rather than just counting all spores (including dead ones). This is the same test we use after treatment to verify results: we compare the post-treatment viable spore count against the pre-treatment baseline.

If the viable count is well within the healthy zone and shows a dramatic reduction from baseline, the treatment is verified complete. This is the standard we hold ourselves to — and it's far more rigorous than a DIY kit.
